Coachella 2012 Fridays

As I mentioned somewhere along the way, I’m going to Coachella again this year. But even when I don’t, I enjoy going through the lineup and checking out all the artists. This is a mix of the ones I like for Friday. It feels like an odd collection, the Friday lineup, but it will be a fun day to kick off everything. A short breakdown:

British artists: Pulp, James, The Horrors*, Yuck*, Arctic Monkeys*, WU LYF*, The Midnight Beast*, Wolf Gang*

French artists: Breakbot, M83, SebastiAn, Madeon*

Texas artists: The Black Angels, Neon Indian, Explosions In The Sky

intense artists: Refused* (hardcore scream punk), Death Grips* (hardcore hiphop), Atari Teenage Riot* (digital hardcore)

women: Mazzy Star, EMA, Hello Seahorse!, honeyhoney*, Ximena Sarinana*

rap/soul/reggae: Frank Ocean, Jimmy Cliff*, Kendrick Lamar

artists I didn’t know very well before doing this and was impressed by: EMA, The Black Angels, Hello Seahorse!

personal favorites of the day: Mazzy Star, Pulp, Frank Ocean

Life In Mixtape Form #12

A fun 8 days… I took a trip up to Canada, returned. Was there for Canada Day, and not here for the Fourth Of July. Started to write a post about 2011 in music but it wasn’t turning out how I wanted, so I scrubbed it. I’ll just note that my list of all-time favorite artists almost entirely consists of people who have happened to put out new music this year (hey, Beck, keep up, thx).

So 2011 has been fun, but also a little odd — I haven’t found too much brand new, and while there’s lots I liked so far, there’s not many that I think are that artist’s best ever (a few exceptions: Gillian Welch, The Kills). But, then, does that really matter? I try not to overly compare new stuff to old stuff, but sometimes, when you know an artist really well, it’s inevitable.

Anyway, some artists that were unknown to me before this year and I now dig:

Oh Land
Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears
Lia Ices
Anna Calvi
Cut Copy
The Antlers
Frank Ocean

AlmostAGhost – Coache11a Friday mix

Unlike last year, I’m not going to Coachella this time around, for various reasons. Even though, I’m not sold on the headliners, the line-up is not one of the reasons. Judging a festival by the headliners is lazy. The fun thing about big festivals is the choose-your-own-adventure vibe. Last year, I saw very little of any of the headliners! There was better things to do. (For example, Fever Ray.)

Anyway, turns out there was 20 bands on Friday I put in my Yes or Maybe category to see (if I were going), and that’s who is in this mix. 🙂

Saturday and Sunday lineups to come in time…
