Here is my monthly mix of new music from 2013. Looking ahead, there’s quite a few of my favorite artists putting stuff out this year, or expected to. So far there’s been a couple things I wanted to share, but not blown away by anything yet. Surely that will turn around soon.
A somewhat bizarre and eclectic mix of new 2012 music this month. Not sure how it ended up so, but it felt that way to me. There’s electronic instrumentals, rap, Dwight Yoakam, groovy stuff, quiet stuff.
These 8 days flew by! Highlighted by a Laura Marling concert, which was phenomenal. It was my third time seeing her, but the first time it was really her element. First time, she was opening for another artist; second time, Coachella. This one was in a tiny outdoor amphitheatre, and it was quite perfect. Her voice, her songs, her sweet shy English charm. Her songs have grown on me quite a lot, her last album took a lot of time to burrow into my brain and realize just how stunning they are. She keeps growing and getting better, and I felt like I was seeing Joni Mitchell or someone at that sort of level. If she’s not there, she will be. Soon.
Hi, what’s new? I have a couple of post/review ideas that I want to write up soon, but they’re both a bit involved/lengthy and I need to find the time/motivation. Will work on them asap. In the meantime, here’s my songs-of-the-day mix.
In case you’re new here by reading end-of-the-year reviews (next one shortly), we also, as you can see, like to make mixes. Breathmint makes some, I have a couple of regular series going on. This one is where every night I pick a sort of “song of the day,” and after eight days, I have enough to share it on 8tracks.com. It ends up like my whole life gets filtered into a mixtape. Play them all in order! Psychoanalyze my choices if you’d like! 😀
8 more days, 8 more songs, my life is shaping up nicely in this way. I enjoy making these, and every night figuring out a good track to share. This week I went to see The Kills in concert, which was great fun, and I’ve been somewhat hooked on their new stuff because of it. That was the highlight of an otherwise mundane 8 days. But these mixes probably end up making my life seem more exciting somehow; that’s the magic of looking at it through a mixtape lens. Haha enjoy.
