That Time Snowden Covered Prince

Like many of you, I probably went way too long without jamming some Prince until recently. I have since corrected for that and came across this in my archives… Snowden covering I Would Die 4 U. It happened April 15, 2006 at Drunken Unicorn Atlanta.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Phoenix Theatre, Petaluma, CA – June 11, 2015

Here is my recording of Neutral Milk Hotel playing Phoenix Theatre, Petaluma, CA on June 11, 2015. Overall I would rate the quality as excellent, with the only issues being faithfully representative of the sound that night. I will seed the partial Robert Schneider recording sometime in the future. In the mean time please enjoy this second source for the last Neutral Milk Hotel gig “for the foreseeable future.” Recording notes and details follow the download links below.

I offer up no apologies for taking a while on seeding this. A recording of this show popped up nearly instantly after Neutral Milk Hotel delivered what may well have been their final show. To the best of my knowledge that recording is anonymous but was seeded by the user BLG in multiple formats and locations around the web. It’s a great quality recording, but it does have a few drawbacks in my opinion. Namely the crowd noise is pretty hefty – it sounds like the taper was right up in front. The vocals and high frequency content are also slightly drowned out. I hadn’t been to this venue before but guessed over-powering bass might be an issue and preemptively enabled the filter on my battery box. That turned out to be a pretty good decision. I also recorded about the second half or so of opener Robert Schneider’s set, which allowed me to get a decent level check and set prior to NMH taking stage. A few moments of 0 dB clipping occurred due to some heartfelt applause which I have cleaned up in this master.

I was seated in the front row of the balcony, dead center. Thanks to the prime location, the filter, and 24/96 recording I am very pleased with this recording. I accidentally stopped recording just at the completion of In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (at 3:09). I missed about 10 seconds, but to gracefully mask this I have spliced in 25 seconds worth of audio from the other (anonymous) recording of this show which was originally seeded by BLG. Thanks for sharing!

Beck – The Masonic, San Francisco, CA – September 19, 2014

It is with great pleasure I present to you another great Beck recording of his sold out show re-opening night at San Francisco’s The Masonic. Once again, I had some level issues during the opening song which was (once again) The Golden Age. While I fiddled with the wrong dial the first couple minutes, I also accidentally cut out 5-10 seconds of audio around 2:40. Once I started recording again, I found the correct dial, and adjusted the gain to get a perfect level for the remainder of the set. You can hear this transition point at 3:02.

The Rolling Stones – November 25, 1994 – Joe Robbie Stadium, Miami, FL

September 17, 1994 around 6:00 am in the parking lot of Sears at the Coral Square Mall, Coral Spring, FL. I took the earliest bus I could to get there. I was one of the first 10 people or so in line. None of us knew Ticketmaster would be using a lottery system that morning. I bought tickets all the time from them during this era, and they hadn’t ever used it before this show – at least not at this location, where I bought tickets for most of the big shows I went to.

I drew an unbelievably bad number and ended up being sent to stand behind hundreds of people who arrived long after I had. After waiting in line for well over four hours, I finally arrived at the counter where I scored two tickets, for me and my stepdad. We were to be seated in the very last row of Joe Robbie Stadium at the low cost of just $100 (not counting Ticketmaster fees). Two months later our backs were against the concrete walls behind us and the techs setting up on stage were just tiny spots. I was so excited!

While we waited for the show to start, the dude next to us smoked crack. When he noticed me staring, he asked if I was a cop. Oh wait, I forgot to mention… I was a fifteen year old kid at the time.

“No.”

“Is your dad a cop?”

“No.” He went back to his pipe. Later he explained he had been looking to buy a joint, but only could find crack in the streets of downtown Miami. The Spin Doctors opened, and they killed it. I can’t believe I actually just typed that. The crowd was pumped. I remember feeling very different from any other show I had been to until that point. Something magical was happening. The crack smoker asked me and my stepdad for a ride home, and we pretended not to hear him as the stadium went into a roar while a spotlight traced a blurry figure walking from the edge of the stage. I glanced over at the Jumbotron and recognized the figure as Whoopi Goldberg. She arrived at center stage, grabbed a mic, and said something like “Ladies and gentlemen… I am here for one reason: to introduce the greatest band in the world – The Rolling Stones.” Everyone went crazy screaming and cheering as she walked away (she later joined the backup chorus during Sweet Virginia) and the band took stage. That’s how I remember it. Below, you can see how it actually went. Oh, I forgot to mention… the whole thing was multi-cam & soundboard pro-shot and broadcast worldwide on Pay-per-View.

Watts’ drums started to pound, Jagger strutted out and took a bow, followed by Richards and Wood. This (tour, not exact show) was the Stones’ first in four or five years (depending on how you count), and they decided to go all out – especially for this show which beyond being on pay-per-view saw a VHS release (followed by a DVD release years later). Special guests on stage that night were Bo Diddley, Robert Cray, and Sheryl Crow. An elaborate set design included gigantic fire breathing snakes, and a detachable section of the stage that moved the band across the floor of the stadium and out amongst the crowd for an acoustic mini-set.

Check out some of the videos below the setlist and witness why this tour became the highest grossing concert tour in history until that time, and until today it remains at #10 (or adjusted for inflation it’s actually #3).

Nothing Matters (Heart is a Drum sample)

A few folks have recently been discussing the sample heard at the end of Heart is a Drum, one of the most popular tracks on Beck’s latest record, Morning Phase. It has been suggested that the sample may be the same Thomas Hendrix sample Beck used in Loser. The origin, of course, is from Steve Hanft’s film Kill the Moonlight, and the sample was also included on the Kill the Moonlight soundtrack.

After reading some speculation on this, I decided to listen closely and see if I could hear the sample many others claimed to clearly detect. I could hear what might sound like the word “driver,” but I wasn’t really convinced. So I took the HDtracks [24-bit 96 kHz FLAC] version of the song and created a mono inverted mix, reversed the playback when I was convinced it was backwards talking, and did some EQ work to isolate vocal frequencies. The end result can be heard below. Sounds like ordinary studio chatter, and the only words that clearly stand out to me are “Nothing Matters.” What do you hear?

Beck – Uptown Amphitheatre, Charlotte, NC – July 11, 2014

A friend of mine recorded this show using a simple rig to an iPhone, and asked if I could help clean it up and get it seeded. Beck — Arlington Theatre, Santa Barbara, CA — April 09, 2014

As promised, night one download below. Please enjoy!

The recording quality is excellent overall, with a few level issues on the intro to Golden Age, a 10 second cut-out during Blue Moon, and I’ve  copied channels during a few moments of particularly loud loud-talkers. The first two issues were related to the fact that this was a new recording set-up for me and I was getting used to levels and button layout on my R-05. These were both sorted out after Devils Haircut, and night two came out nearly flawless – for that recording you can head over to http://np.cyanidebreathmint.net/2014/04/14/beck-arlington-theatre-santa-barbara-ca-april-10-2014/.

July 2013

July 2013 from almostaghost on 8tracks Radio.

Kind of odd mix of new music this month. Didn’t really find any albums I loved (maybe one) but a bunch I thought were just ok, so I had to delve deep. Also it’s all over the place in styles/genres. Anyway, hi.
