Life In Mixtape Form #15

This week was musically highlighted by a Thurston Moore concert, which was wonderful. His new album is an acoustic album, basically. It was a blast to hear him stripped back–two acoustic guitars, a harpist, a violinist, drummer. And among this, his voice really stood out; he’s a great singer! Usually, it’s easier to focus on his electric guitar freakout amazingness, or his poetic lyrics, I’ve never really thought of his voice before like that. Dude is a legend for a reason. :)

Anyway enjoy the mix; there’s an older Thurston song on there, which he did play at the show (and acoustic too).

Life In Mixtape Form #13

Boom, the 13th 8-song set of my life. Lucky number 13! To recap if you joined this late, every night, I pick a new song that represents the day, I want to share, is cool, etc. I have a method to finding a song, but it a) varies and b) is a secret. :D At the end of 8 days, I have 8 tracks, which is the minimum for a new 8tracks.com mix, and I share them here for you. I don’t know how long I’ll keep doing this, but for now, it still entertains me. And I hope you enjoy the music.

Life In Mixtape Form #12

A fun 8 days… I took a trip up to Canada, returned. Was there for Canada Day, and not here for the Fourth Of July. Started to write a post about 2011 in music but it wasn’t turning out how I wanted, so I scrubbed it. I’ll just note that my list of all-time favorite artists almost entirely consists of people who have happened to put out new music this year (hey, Beck, keep up, thx).

So 2011 has been fun, but also a little odd — I haven’t found too much brand new, and while there’s lots I liked so far, there’s not many that I think are that artist’s best ever (a few exceptions: Gillian Welch, The Kills). But, then, does that really matter? I try not to overly compare new stuff to old stuff, but sometimes, when you know an artist really well, it’s inevitable.

Anyway, some artists that were unknown to me before this year and I now dig:

Oh Land
Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears
Lia Ices
Anna Calvi
Cut Copy
The Antlers
Disappears
Frank Ocean
